All About Chronic Diseases

There are two fundamental kinds of problems of illness – processes, and attributes.

A chronic process illness has a chronic process cause. Perhaps the most obvious are illnesses of malnutrition like obesity and starvation. These conditions exist until the dietary process is healthy, curing them. Any disease can be chronic when the problem is chronic.

Attributes are objects, nouns. Attribute disorders are generally chronic except the attribute is temporary. They are cured by adjusting or alteration of the associated conditions.

Cataracts, for example, are chronic diseases till they are cured by surgery. Chronic migraine is a chronic disease until mysteriously, the problem is addressed, curing the disease. Diabetes is a chronic disease until the cause is addressed, curing it – in which case the cure is generally ignored.

Obesity might look like an attributing cause until we try to cure it by losing weight. The cure fails unless the process cause is addressed.

Medically, most illnesses are not considered chronic unless they are also considered incurable. As a result, the common cold, measles, and warts are not chronic – except perhaps for a “chronic cold”. In general, if a chronic illness is cured, the cure is ignored because chronic diseases are medically incurable.

The term ‘chronic’ means ‘long-term’; ‘illness’ means ‘suffering due to poor health’; ‘disease’ means ‘diagnosable health state posing threat to health and life’

We have moved from the era of acute diseases to chronic diseases over the past 7 decades since heart attacks, diabetes, hypertension are getting diagnosed at increasing rates. Most people under treatment recover from illness but stay with the disease condition almost lifelong.

Medical sciences have worked very well in conquering infectious diseases that reduced the mortality rate due to fevers and also raised the duration of life people are living. However, new patterns of diseases that take a long time to form within our body systems and manifest at an advanced stage of disease when chances of reversing diseases become less and treatments tend to stay lifelong.

The topmost factors causing chronic diseases are sedentary obesogenic lifestyles, risky avocations like smoking and alcohol, indoor living, online living, health illiteracy, exposure to stress, and accelerated aging.

The approaches to care also differ where medicines and surgeries become relevant at irreversible stages of the disease. The best opportunity comes with a goal-centric approach to enhance life and health in a programmed fashion. Let’s say a 20-year-old person plans the next 5 years by choosing work-life, arts & music, outdoor sports, and healthy relationships that complement each other to enjoy the multi-spectral colors of life. This plan works to balance health and wellness optimally to prevent disease formation over time till the plan is sustained.
